Detect bleeding in real-time

novineon Healthcare Technology  works on integrating sensor technology into a tiny telemetric implant prototype. Manfred Kauer and Zeynep Kizilbay found out how they are going to do this.

Who is novineon?

novineon Healthcare Technology Partners GmbH, is active in the healthcare market as business consulting firm as well as research and development company. As such, novineon acts on an international scale. Novineon’s multidisciplinary composition of experts enable it to accompany industry with consulting services during the innovation, certification and marketing phases of medical products, as well as to identify market demands and to develop innovative medical devices that are oriented to the users needs.

What are you going to do?

novineon has invented a novel optical sensor principle for the detection of the presence of blood in the digestive tract. Bleeding of the digestive tract affects about 100 per 100.000 inhabitants and can cause a life-threatening situation for the patient if not timely recognized. novineon’s sensor technology promises to detect bleeding in real-time. Incorporated into a tiny active implant, novineon expects this technology to alter the clinical management of acute inner bleeding. The researchers at novineon were integrating this novel sensor technology into a tiny telemetric implant prototype. This prototype further incorporates wireless communication technologies (transceiver), to allow for sending an alert signal to an external receiver unit in the event of bleeding.

Transferring prototype technology into a medical product

novineon is now working on transferring this prototype technology in a medical product. For this, special expertise in RF technology for optimization of the transceiver design, is needed. As well as access to equipment and analytical services for qualification of the transceiver performance this to be able to comply with the normative and regulatory regulations relevant for medical product approval.

A good match with Philips Applied Technologies

With the FASILIS voucher, novineon found an excellent opportunity to get access to these competences at Philips Applied Technologies in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. This cooperation is expected to enable novineon to obtain an own, proprietary, highly integrated and implantable transceiver technology; a component indispensible for the success of its novel bleeding detection implant.

What is the fit with novineon's innovation activities?

novineon is relying on its European network in academia and industry and are continuously seeking for further sustainable cooperations, in particular with professionals from the private sector active in the field of medical product commercialization. The profile of Philips Applied Technologies fits excellent with these requirements, as it covers all steps from research to medical product development and marketing.

What will the future look like?

The roadmap of novineon's R&D activities is directed towards smart microdevices for the healthcare market. The particular competences of Philips are of interest during the further commercialization of the bleeding detection implant as well as for novineons pipeline of next generation medical microdevices. Also, competences of novineon such as in conducting medical assessment, clinical studies and clinical evaluations as consulting services for the healthcare industry is of potential interest for the facility and its affiliated group. Further co-operations are likely to take place after successful completion of the project within the scope of the FASILIS voucher.
